Saturday: Spontaneity
We had a constructive morning catching up with the somewhat overgrown garden. It’s amazing how quickly everything grows here, particularly the bamboo. I guess it’s to do with the amount of rainfall. My favourite job is lopping at the bamboo which often involves climbing on the garage roof.
P and J callEd this afternoon to see what we were up to this evening. ‘Nothing’, we said, so a rapid plan was hatched whereby they brought over all the makings for burgers and we’d have a barbecue. The reason we were doing it at ours, not theirs, is because we have a bigger deck and we could do the distancing thing. The rains came, though, so rapidly put paid to that as we had to move indoors. By then, we’d also discussed that we were done with all this distancing and as we had all been careful we were going to throw caution to the wind. It was a great night - we ate, drank, made merry and played cards in a game where J just seemed to make up the rules as she went along.

I’ve been a bit hit and miss in listing the books I’ve read and have possibly missed a few but since the last update I’ve read:
‘Slouching Towards Bethlehem’, Joan Didion
Paris Review 232
Granta 110 (‘Sex’)
‘Claws Of The Panda‘, Jonathan Manthorpe
‘I Was A Stranger’, John Hackett
‘The Bell Jar’, Sylvia Plath
