Local Architecture

First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH for lovely comments for my 300th! I am greatly encouraged! :))

Today began early with a visit to the hospital for G to have her first post-op mammogram and ultrasound - a year after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It's all looking good and the Dr is very happy AND she paid much less than expected as there was only one to analyse!

This of course called for a little celebration, so we stopped by to collect delicious Puranmal samosas en route to the Creek. Nice day again thanks to Saturdays' rain, in fact it was so nice, we drove as much as we could along the Creek to take pictures on a (rare) clear day.

Bastakiya is the old Iranian quarter of Dubai. It was settled by traders from Bastak in Iran who brought with them, this very unique bit of engineering that is called a Wind Tower. It is essentially an airconditioner. The wind hits the walls from whichever direction it is blowing and gets channeled into the room below. Even better if you put a bit of wet sack-cloth in its path. The difference it makes can be 10degC between the outside and inside temperature. Definitely significant on a hot day. The house itself is made using coral - the only building material available apart from palm fronds and sand!

Busy afternoon and evening with a few important things dealt with. For some reason - no idea why - but everything computer/internet related in this house today has had some kind of problem and I have not been able to sort them all out despite trying everything I can think of! Why would that happen?? Annoying!
