Box Canyon
Headed west to El Morro National Monument to get out of the heat. This is one of the best easy hikes in New Mexico. Though El Morro sits at 7,000 ft. elevation (2134 meters), the hike is only a mile and a half long up a maintained switch-back trail to the box canyon rim, across the rim and down.the other side. Native Americans had a settlement on top of the canyon from 1250 - 1400. It is incredibly peaceful on top making it easy to see why people would live here. A natural spring provides water.
What a difference a day makes! Ten campsites are available, but like all the other parks and trails we've been to in the past few months, no one is here. Tomorrow we will drive north to Durango, CO.
