Halo

I took my lunch break at work today out on the school field, sitting on a bench in the shade of a tree.  It was very pleasant.

When I looked up, I was surprised to see a rainbow coloured ring round the sun.  I have never seen this before, but I gather it is called a 22 degree halo and is caused by light reflected and refracted in ice crystals in high clouds - not there was much cloud to see today. Apparently it is sometimes a forerunner of bad weather.  Well, that's not what the forecasters are saying - they are  predicting fine hot weather here for the next few days.

This was just a quick capture with my phone (it would have taken too long to run back to the Science block to fetch my camera).  Convenient that the vapour trail from the plane punctured the ring and added interest (noticeably, there were a number of planes in the air today).
