Day 98: Emerging

Today is the day everybody here has been waiting for.

At midnight tonight, our State of Alarm is officially ended. 98 days of lockdown, the strictest in Europe, has meant that Spain has slowed the spread of the virus to such an extent that we can now begin to enter the state of "new normality".

Our borders will reopen and visitors from the EU and Schengen countries will be welcomed back and the tourist industry kick-started.

But we are urged to show restraint, to maintain social distancing and observe the compulsory wearing of face masks in busy places.

If all goes well and we are sensible, we should emerge from this pandemic safely and without a dreaded second wave in the autumn.
