Lovely old .....
...... building.
I found this today , must have past it many times and not really taken much notice.
The Old Jail is country pub / restaurant the history of which is a bit sketchy .
Here's what I've found : :
The Old Jail is a grade 2 listed building dating back to the 18th Century . Seems to belonged to Fox & Sons Brewery but was finally sold 1909 after being closed for a year .
Very little is known about the origin of the name but probably long long ago when prisoners were being taken from London to Maidstone Jail this was the overnight accommodation point.
The pub as such seems to have been established in 1873 . I can find entries from 1855 when it seemed to have been owned by the Lewis family who were Beer retailers and Farmers. In 1891 ownership appeared to have changed to the Cowlard and Baker family but by 1960 it became Leonard Alfred Dupere who took ownership he was a Licensed Victualler . Other than this history is either missing or doesn't exist!
Hope you've all had a fruitful safe day folks
Grateful .... for "A's" help in a bit of painting
