Mackenzie Meridian
Erected in 1770 by James Mackenzie who was Lord Privy Seal and an amateur astronomer. Also known as Privy's Prap (chimney).
We were supposed to be in Corsica this week so we decided to have a week of doing some local exploring, the weather in Corsica has been very wet recently so our walks might have been affected.
After a morning of admin we travelled a few miles to Newtyle and did a walk that took us along the old railway, up Newtyle Hill (and a short detour as we took a wrong path in the mist) and along to the meridian. It isn't on the top of the hill and so we couldn't see it until we were quite near.
We came back along the track we'd looked for earlier and then back to the railway and the village.
The reason we chose today, despite the weather, was the presence of the chip van (sometimes used after a run in the area) which does excellent fish suppers. A real treat.
