Garden Tiger

We’ve seen a few of these in the garden recently. It’s an Arctia Caja - better known as the Garden Tiger or ‘woolly bear’ on account of its exceptionally hairy abdomen. They have all been moving quickly across open ground which suggests they are looking for a spot to pupate - where they will turn into big colourful moths.
