Day 166/20. My first New Forest field trip.
My first foray of the year into the New Forest of the year, which is just a few miles from us.
The insects are starting to appear in numbers, still not at their peak and the stiff breeze today keeping much in hiding.
But here is a shot from today showing the fabulously intricate wings of a Keeled Skimmer Dragonfly. The Keeled Skimmer is almost unknown anywhere north of London, but pretty common in the New Forest if you know where to look. Their wings are the most fabulously intricate, like stained glass. Keeled Skimmers are about 5cm nose to tail and are fiercely territorial.
Extra picture today is an alternate angle.
