To a Chrisp
Had a bike ramble down to Chrisp Street market. It will back to much more like pre-Covid by Monday. These two gents were having a cig break and were happy to be snapped.
Chrisp Street gets an occasional mention on Call The Midwife. And a cycling pal of mine who grew up in Forest Gate tells me how his mum used to refer disparagingly to people who were "common as muck - straight out of Chrisp Street".
The shopping centre there is a microcosm of 1950's bomb site redevelopment. There's a listed clocktower by Sir Frederick Gibberd in a Festival of Britain design. You could say that it's tired but I liked it and there were lots of locals sitting outside the cafes and browsing in the bargain shops. Moderate distancing going on. Perhaps not with these two. Who knows? I'm confused by where we are at.
