Black Lives Matter Protest Art
Today was a joy. For the first time since early March, I went out into the city to make photos. Instead of making photos of people protesting, I had a great time making photos of the people's art. Back when the protests started (it might have been May 28) people broke the windows of the Louis Vuitton and Apple stores. The next day sheets of plywood were installed in front of the broken windows, and someone in the stores' management teams decided to paint the plywood black. When an artist named Emma Berger was walking her dog and saw them, she decided they had to become a canvas for chalking protest art. Soon other artists joined her, some with spray paints and acrylics, others with chalk. Now there is this amazing ephemeral memorial. My favorite portrait of them all is a portrait of Moose (Quanice) Hayes. Extra. His grandmother and great-grandmother are deeply touched by it.
If you'd like to see it all, plus the memorial being hung on the fence the police have used to block off the so-called Justice Building, I have an album here.
Following in Ceridwen's footsteps: Apologies if anyone's been wondering about my absence from Blip but I've been otherwise engaged and haven't found time to keep up.
