Phallus impudicus

This morning I tracked down the source of the foul smell in the back garden. It wasn't the liquid comfrey feed that I've got brewing in an old dustbin but this enormous common stinkhorn. Insects have eaten away the dark olive gleba that covers the cap revealing the honeycomb structure that lies beneath. Stinkhorns usually appear in small groups so I will keep a close eye on this corner of the garden to see if I can photograph some of the other stages in its life cycle.
