The bald truth
‘Bald men could be at higher risk of severe coronavirus symptoms,’ warned a headline Gugs read today. This scientific insight was based on 80 of 122 male covid patients in a Madrid ward being bald, higher than the baldness rate in the population at large. Given that old men are much more likely to be bald than young men, and given that age is the most significant risk factor for contracting serious cases of covid, this didn’t feel very earth-shattering. It felt like stretching for news. The media need new angles. How about pressuring governments to avoid worsening inequalities in the post-covid era.
My colleague James gathered a few of us in his garden in the evening and we withstood fairly bracing temperatures to eat grilled food and toast his birthday.
After a lovely evening and a peaceful walk back to the house (bike puncture still not fixed), I made the mistake of checking the news. Trump’s ramblings about today being ‘a great day’ for George Floyd are sickening and dismissive. George Floyd isn’t smiling down from a piece of cloud, happy that the topic of race relations is making global headlines. He lost his life to an incident of police brutality and callousness, and didn’t ask to martyr himself. He would share the anger millions of us do. Never has one human been so utterly clueless and tactless as ‘President’ Donald Trump.
