Wolf Spider with young on back
I found this female Wolf Spider (pardosa amentata) in the garden this afternoon. I am not well up on spiders so I had to look it up as I had never seen a spider covered in 'bobbles' before. Apparently the female carries her eggs about in a sack at the rear by her spinnerets but when the eggs hatch she will for a few days carry her young on her back.
The wolf spider is so named as it hunts down its prey by leaping on it like a wolf. There are apparently several varieties of wolf spider worldwide and with some of the American varieties the young actually consume their mother in a process called matriphagy. I could find no mention of the British ones doing this!
