Sgwarnog: In the Field

By sgwarnog

1877

Time to make the most of the morning sun on Bradford sandstone again.

Light shines on 1877, when Crazy Horse fought the Battle of Wolf Mountain, and was later killed in captivity, Tchaikovsky debuted Swan Lake, Victoria was declared Empress of India and Wimbledon's first tennis tournament was played. In Bradford, the Corporation began slum clearance.

This is the eaves detailing of Parkinson's Building, which lies on Hustlergate slightly in the shadow of its grand gothic neighbour the Wool Exchange. There are lots of date stones high up on buildings in the city - it would be quite a project to record them all and see how many years from the 1700s to the 1900s were covered.

My untutored eye found this feauture attractive, but when I consulted John Ayer's Architecture in Bradford I was put right:

"This neat little office block, five storeys high, was erected in 1877. The main elevation is nicely balanced and is marred only by an overelaborate central feature at eaves level."

The neat little office block in full elevation.
