Diary of an Edinburgher

Beach!

We were up and off to the beach early (9am) as it was going to be another scorcher, and Porty Beach gets jam-packed later in the day. It’s within the 5 miles our First Minister suggested.

Archie went straight into the sea and stood up to his armpits (Extra). I almost joined him - it looked fabulous.

The tide was right in, the sea was like a mill pond, and there were plenty of swimmers in. One woman was just getting dressed, and I noticed an empty prosecco bottle, and being nosy, enquired if she was celebrating something. She said she’d been down at the beach since sunrise and had been swimming, and it was just wonderful. She was indeed celebrating, she said, but just in general, I think. We had a coffee and a bacon bap each at the caravan, and left before the hordes arrived.

In the afternoon we dandered over to the Links to sit in the shade. The queue for ice cream was just too long, so we came home. Archie had to stay on the lead, as there were too many people having picnics, so he wasn’t exactly delighted. He was even less delighted when he had a haircut followed by a bath.

The evening was still so warm, but was now much more pleasant to be outside, so we took another dander (9,455 steps) round the Meadows. It was mobbed with lots of groups enjoying the new relaxation of lockdown rules.

We should have been in Wales last weekend, visiting our Kiwi pals on their big UK trip. Then a few more days touring around. What a shame the Kiwis are missing out on the sunniest May on record. But it’s very welcome as lockdown eases.
