Lake Union Drydock

Fairview One Street

welders, pipefitters,
machinists, riggers, shipwrights
it's full service here

Many lake oriented photos today on our slow walk down Fairview, but the day was so dark and gloomy I'm choosing this one, partly for the lights on at 10AM! We do love seeing what goes on at these commercial docks ..... the former NOAA dock I've already blipped deserves its own series sometime,-today there were many cranes working..you can barely see it on the right edge of this. The rain came down in earnest about 2 minutes later.
This is the entrance to Lake Union Drydock, the next big dock to the south, covering 12 acres. It was established in 1919 and is the premier shipyard on the West coast, having the last remaining all wooden docks, and it's fresh water - no tides. There are 2 drydocks (to the left of this dock) one can lift a 6000 ton 420 ft ship, and the other a 1200 ton. It's full service ship repair, employing many different craftspeople. We often see a WA state ferry there and we used to see the NOAA ships. Now they also have some private yacht storage and moorage for big boats and they lease to a small float plane co.(another blip soon)
I love this mixed use of our neighborhood - but have sadly watched some other cool small businesses being replaced by fancy condos or floating homes...
Lots to look at , large is better...

Here's another view from last spring of this dock...

Part of my One Street series. I've lost track of the numbering and they're not in order geographically anyway, and I may try to go back and add others that fit here --with happily NO poem!!
