What could this be?

I walked with Linda this morning, through the woods and the vineyards, and we came upon a field with a crop we hadn't seen before. What could it be?
We guessed people must have asked the farmer a few times, as he'd put a sign in the field telling us it was 'Textile Hemp' grown without pesticides!
