If I cleaned my cupboards out more frequently I would not have known that between 1940 and 1957 the postage for letter weighing 2 oz was tuppence hapenny. Today it is 76p - about 15 old shillings. This book of stamps cost half a crown. A letter posted to a local urban address first thing in the morning in 1957 would probably have been delivered at lunchtime.
