Venus

Venus is currently just over 48 million kms from Earth. Light takes 2minutes 40 seconds to reach us from it.
As it moves closer to the Sun its crescent phase becomes ever more slender and reaches 'new' at what is called inferior conjunction, when Venus lies directly in line between Earth and the Sun. It reappears as a slender crescent in the morning sky, gradually waxing as it moves further to the west of the Sun but also getting smaller in diameter.
It will reach a point called elongation and then begin to move gradually towards the Sun again, getting smaller all the time. At superior conjunction Venus will be full but invisible as the Sun lies between it and Earth. The planet then reappears in the evening sky gradually moving to the east of the Sun before reaching elongation and starting back, increasing its crescent phase...... and away we go again!
