Baby Hawk
Before I tell you about this little hawk in our backyard,... a quick update about Angus. He is A-OK. Silly...Happy...and eating impatiently with his usual bad manners. See EXTRA.
Baby hawks are called "eyas". This guy was living high up in our pine tree. We could often hear him squawking up a storm before being fed by his parents. EXTRA
Young redtails, fledge 42-46 days after hatching. For the first few weeks after fledging, the eyases are “branchers” — perching inconspicuously in lower branches. During this time, they will still be actively fed by their parents, as they begin to learn to fly and hunt on their own.Young red-tailed hawks may be dependent on their parents until they are about 15 weeks old, at which time the parents stop responding to begging cries.
We are looking forward to seeing this guy around the neighborhood.
