Before being replaced by a bridge in 1995 ferries ran from Kyle of Lochalsh a railhead to Kyleakin on Skye. The earliest ferry crossed from Glenelg further south of Kyle. Boswell and Johnson used that ferry in the 1770s and a ferry still crosses there if a bridge isn't your choice
The main card of 1931 shows a long queue  of foot passengers on the slipway waiting for a small Kyleakin ferry while Macbrayne's steamer Fusilier heads from the railway pier to Portree the largest town well to the north
Extra cards show ferries cars and people in the 1950s
Although the ferries became larger from the 1970s the road improvements and increasing car ownership led to huge queues and long waits in summer and the eventual decision to build a bridge.
