Bird’s-eye primrose

The highlight of my day. Bird’s-eye primrose (Primula farinosa) is a delight to see. The farinosa in the Latin name comes from the fact that its stems and leaves are dusted with what looks like a very fine coating of flour.

It is fussy about where it grows flourishing where lime rich water seeps through peat. Because of this it is largely restricted to limestone country in the Northern Pennines and the Lake District. Luckily for us this extends into the Arnside/Silverdale area.
