A Tale of Two Similes

I love the writing of Kazuo Ishiguro.   Under fair quotation rules I share a paragraph from his novel, The Buried Giant, that shows why, in my view, he is a Nobel Laureate in literature.  The opening and closing similes are outstanding, in my humble opinion.
