Our 24mile walk
So this was the weekend that I said to mom and dad "Just don't move on the weekend of the 11th May because I'm doing a sponsored walk and won't be able to help", of course...that was the date it fell! :( They just would not take any kind of control about speed or dates, so at someone else's call they moved today.
I thought long and hard about dropping out of the walk in order to help mom and dad. But in the end decided that I might actually really need to have this weekend as a break - one that I had really been looking forward to as a holiday! - being that I've had no break since this nightmare began and won't once they are down here!
So....
the walk.....
Beautiful day.
Left our B&B early, walked across town (all the way down the hill across the bridge and all the way back up the other side) to the Abby where we met up with the rest of the group. Quite a range of people. A minibus then transported us to Scarborough Castle, dropped us off and left us to walk back to Whitby.
There were three 'guides' keeping track that everyone was ok on the way.
Cathie and I were so happy just to wander along at our own pace. We chatted away quite happily and as time went by we became quieter and quieter. Then recognising where we were stopped at a cafe for a drink. We got a can of coke each. The map shows the route, the cans our start and end points and the sunglasses where we were when we stopped.
As we started back on our way we both just laughed and laughed! Never have either of us felt the effect of caffeine and sugar so much! That coke gave us the boost we were needing and the chatter resumed double speed! :D
As I said we happily wandered along at our own pace and I think we were last for quite some time. Chris (the back sweeper guy) walked along with us for quite a while until we met some of the group that were struggling and he needed to help them and then discovered that there was another group way off somewhere behind us on the cliff tops when we were on the beach.
We arrived back at Whitby Abby (Brewery to be more precise) in good spirits and having REALLY enjoyed our 'holiday'. We were treated to a pint for finishing the walk so I started a trend and ordered a pint of milk. The bar tender was a bit bemused at being asked for a pint of milk but then when Cathie and Chris did the same I think we had totally lost the plot! ;D
After sitting for a little bit too long chatting to some of the other walkers, Cathie and I headed off rather stiffly back down the cliff, across the bridge and along to Magpie's for some fish and chips for dinner. Standing in line waiting to get in was ok as we could keep our legs moving. Sitting down was LOVELY. Dinner was very tasty. Getting back up again to start the climb up the cliff to our B&B was hilarious!!! ;D We were so sore and stiff! Once we go on the move again it was't too bad but we did wonder why we had chosen a B&B at the top of the 'wrong' cliff.....and to add insult to injury our room was on the forth floor!! Hahaha!
