How did you become involved with photography?
Well, of course, through my father, who I was very close to. I appreciated his work and I loved it. Then, when we went to Mexico in 1925, when I was about twelve years old, he showed me how to use his 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 inch Graflex. He put it on a tripod and gave me some idea of exposure (in those days we had no meters). I looked into the camera, at the back in the ground glass - it was tremendously exciting. I've never been the same since. But he left me very much alone; he never tried to steer me intellectually.
