Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2020 Friday — Trailhead

As we drove past the corner of Rancho Road & Main Street today Mr. Fun slowed down so I could capture this photo. It was just 45 years ago that we were getting prepared to have a vow renewal “wedding” ceremony for our 10th Wedding Anniversary.

Ten years before that we had gotten married in a rinky-dink wedding chapel in the city of Norwalk. I was 15 years old and Mr. Fun was 19. Because we had a baby on the way, my mom insisted that I would not be allowed to wear white. The days leading toward our 1965 wedding were fairly ugly with emotionally distraught parents (and that is putting it lightly).

So 10 years later we were wanting to do something significant for our anniversary. One thought had been to go to Hawaii for an island vacation. Then Mr. Fun nonchalantly said, “We ought to get married again.”

I took his “ought” and “wrought” it into a plan. The first big snag came when I learned that the church we wanted to use for the ceremony was already booked with the biggest Boy Scout event of the year. So I started hunting for a church. I stopped at one small church and the minister let me in to see the building and I was unimpressed as I looked at the tattered carpet and unkempt facility. The pastor told me he wouldn’t consider doing our vow renewal if we weren’t interested in getting religious. All I wanted was out of his office and to get back to my car. Once that happened, I drove a half-mile south on Main Street to Rancho Road.

I knew a huge church was on that corner. I knew nothing about the church. The secretary walked me over to the sanctuary from the office. I stood looking down the great big center aisle and knew I had found the place to have our 10th Anniversary Vow renewal. The pastor was not in his office, but the secretary assured me she would have him phone me.

I had no idea of the trailhead I was at. That moment changed the trajectory of our lives.

This story will be continued as the merry, merry month of May progresses.

“Happy Anniversary to us” is on it’s way!
