Wish you were here......
.........unfortunately ,however !!
Many years ago we lived on Cape Wrath ,in a house that overlooked the sea and one of Sutherlands many beautiful beaches.
In terms of social distancing, it scored 11 out of 10 ;the nearest habitable house was 2 miles away (whilst the view from our house was spectacular ,this was the only house we could see)
There were otters, seals ,deer ,eagles salmon in the river ;you name it ,they were there ;-)
To get there you had to take a small boat : driving to Cape Wrath is not possible . .No traffic noise ,or Sunday lawn mowers.....just the curlews singing on the shoreline :-)
So here we were ,living the Good Life ; two small daughters playing on their own beach ,and having adventures in the great outdoors.
No TV, let alone I phone, to interrupt their games .
Helping with the hens, growing Brussels sprouts, carrots, potatoes ,broccoli (how I longed for mangos, peaches, plums delicious sweet grapes !! )
With my big bushy beard (that todays TV weathermen would give their eye teeth for :-D ) headband, open leather sandals, handspun scratchy jerseys that had only recently been a sheep's duvet ,I made a passable imitation of Grizzly Adams. With Maureen diligently beavering away on the spinning wheel ,or washing clothes in a tub .......there being no electricity :-O.......you get the picture , I m sure :-D
We loved it there :-)
Then one summers day we got a postcard from my sister who lived in Cromer ,Norfolk at the time. With crowds of promenaders ,trousers rolled up to the knees and knotted handkerchiefs on bald heads ,enjoying candy floss and ice cream. A Waltzer and a pier fun fair ,with sharp eyed merchants looking out for would be sharpshooters to throw away their holiday money :-D
After superciliously scoffing at the very idea of the Seaside that is Cromer ,we smugly went about our business ,leaving the postcard on the kitchen table .
Some 15 mins later I came into the kitchen to find our 4 and 2 year old daughters staring ,entranced ,at this amazing and wonderful world that up till now had eluded them .
I felt immediately ashamed and humbled, and ,as so often happens in life ,learnt a lesson from something so simple .
And there and then , made a commitment to take my daughters on a seaside holiday ....candy floss and all !
Needless to say....I didnt quite get round to it !! :-((
Fortunately, they seem to have grown beyond it and are well rounded adults :-))
But I have my comeuppance......for here am I having my lunch on this lovely day in the shade of my garden parasol ,thinking wistfully how it would be rather nice to go to a Play, a Pie, and a Pint at the Oran Mhor in Glasgow :-(
Im sure, you also, would love to :-O
