Azalea

Yellow azalea purchased many years ago from Inverue Garden, Poolewe in Wester Ross.

The gardens were first established by Osgood Mackenzie in the 1862 using imported soil from Ireland. The temperate climate influenced by the Gulf Stream is ideal for the cultivation of many exotic plants. Douglas Fir, Corsican Pine and Rhododendrons were planted by Mackenzie as a windbreak.

The gardens were given to The National Trust for Scotland together with a generous endowment for future upkeep in 1952 by Mackenzie’s daughter Mairi Sawyer.
