Lady's Slippers
Today's the day ……………………….. for a Garden of Paradise
More rain-soaked flowers today - but these are very special ones from a very special garden.
We went this morning to Cally Gardens, near Gatehouse of Fleet, to pick up some plants that we had ordered on-line. It is a treasure trove of exotic and rare hardy plants gathered from around the globe in what was once the kitchen and pleasure garden for Cally Palace. The restoration of the garden and its surviving buildings, including a huge lean-to vinery is a labour of love for acclaimed plantsman Kevin Hughes, who took over ownership in 2018.
However, the recent restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic have been disastrous for Cally Gardens. This is the time when preparation work in the nursery is at its peak - and when most of the annual income occurs from plant sales. None of this has been possible this year - and because it is still early days for the business, there isn't likely to be any sort of compensation available to it.
But it is possible to order some plants online - and if you are close enough to be able to go and collect yourself, then even better. If you are a lover of special plants for your garden, I would absolutely recommend you to have a look …………………...
