Abstract of Housing,
This was taken on High Street near the junction of Eaglesfield Street in Maryport. High Street is the oldest street in "Alauna", this being the name of the town when the Romans were here in AD 122. Maryport was also known as Ellenfoot, being at the foot of the River Ellen. The Lord of the Manor changed the name to Maryport after his wife Mary Senhouse. High Street was the direct link from the Roman Fort and, what is now called Castle Hill, where a watchtower was that overlooked the Roman harbour at the bottom of Castle Hill.
