Water

One of the major things that the London Lead Mining Company did for the village was provide a clean water supply. The system was completed in 1858.

Water was drawn from springs on fields above the village and carried down in pipes to four reservoirs and then by a syke to houses and to taps around the village. Some of the sections of the syke are visible and some exist underground. Four of the taps still exist, although they no longer function, and this is one of them. The clean water supply was undoubtedly important in preventing the cholera outbreak in the mid 19th century from being as severe as it was in other parts of the country.

In the background of the photo you can see some of the sandstone houses built using stone from yesterday's quarry.
