The Newlands Estate

Our walk today led us down the bank of the Calder, upstream to Newlands.

We were looking for the next stage of our giant circular walk.

The Newlands Estate dates back some 900 years in this area of Wakefield, and is a site of some historic interest. Bigger than some small villages the estate was deserted in the 20th century and by the 1950's all the buildings were derelict. Most of the removeables have gone and trees now grow through skeletal roof timbers.

We got as far as 'Newland Lakes', flooded opencast mines from the last attempt to resurrect the estate and finding the lakes across the track, we had to turn back.
