Gardner's Inn, Great Western Highway, Blackheath
Built in 1831, and rebuilt in 1938 after the original building was destroyed by fire, Gardner's Inn is the oldest continuously licensed hotel in the Blue Mountains.
In the course of his visit to the antipodes in HMS Beagle, 26 year old Charles Darwin stayed here in 1836 on his way to Bathurst making observations of the local fauna.
Normally on Anzac Day this hotel would be packed with people remembering those who fell in war, over a "few" cold bevies and maybe a game of 2 Up, but today it is eerily quiet due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Quite ironic that the pubs that remained open through two world wars are now silent for the first time "ever".
