Save the Byre Theatre
St Andrew's Byre Theatre, which is Scotland's only 5* arts venue, faces liquidation.
Naturally, the news had been met with great sadness by the students and locals in St Andrews and the gathering represented that today. For the last year and a half I've worked in the restaurant within the theatre and later as part of the theatre itself so I knew many of the staff affected. I was set to take some work hours this semester, too, but my misfortune entirely pales in comparison to those who worked hard to keep the theatre afloat and who have now lost their job.
It will take some saving, though. Perhaps the university might express some interest in it. It would be a great shame for it to lie barren in such an iconic Scottish town, but art funding is extremely hard to come by; in fact the Byre's predicament is symptomatic of this. If the Byre were to disappear it would be detrimental to the otherwise reasonably uneventful St Andrews.
The tasteful but dramatically angled glass building of the theatre juts out like a gem in amongst the the old buildings at the end of south street and to lose it would be a tragedy to many people for whom it is so precious.
