Local history
I was up with the lark this morning, did my walk, collected the Sunday papers, cleaned the kitchen, hoovered and washed the floor all by 9.45am.
I haven’t done very much since although I had a very useful Face Time conversation with fellow Blipper A, about our (fingers crossed) holiday to Australia and New Zealand in Autumn 2021.
My Blip is the Church of Saint Nicholas. It’s a tiny church that was replaced by the larger St John’s. It’s had a chequered history and this building was only put up in 1877. There is an inscription on the front if you enlarge it that says “To the glory of God and to the beloved memory of her husband and son with all who rest in this Holy Ground. This church is erected by Anne Maitland.”
It was constructed as a private chapel for Loughton Hall, it was refurbished as a public place of worship in 1947 as a Chapel of Ease for St John’s. Interestingly even though it’s not that old, it is a listed building.
