Making Mulch
We aren't getting garden waste collected at the moment. The two brown bins were full of pruned branches and cut back woody perennials. I'd also decided to chop down the useful but rather thuggish shrub kerria which is a good screen but tends to take over. The result was an enormous pile of discarded green stuff. So we took the primitive mincer out of the shed and set it to work. Unfortunately it is very noisy (sorry neighbours) but it does the job. The trick is not to become impatient and feed in too much at once. It snarls up very easily. This garden mincer is ancient. Cameraman's dad gave it to him about 25 years ago and it was pretty long in the tooth then. Astonishingly it was brought back from the south of England on a plane in the days when a) Cameraman flew and b) such luggage was permitted. Hard to imagine.
Here is the resulting mulch with said kerria flowers prominent. The shrub will grow back really quickly. The mulch will suppress some weeds and do a bit of good to the soil.
A good early morning walk in bright sunshine. Coffee online with my sister then lots of time in the garden. I'm not in Shetland (obviously) but I am enjoying the sunny weather at home.
