'Rebecca'
I finished reading Daphne Du Maurier's 'Rebecca' today. It has to be one of the most subtly thought-provoking books I've read.
It reminded me many times of an existentialist, feminist philosopher I recently studied at university, Simone De Beauvoir, who famously stated "One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman". 'Rebecca' appears to me to be a perfect, albeit dark, illustration of this idea.
Sally Beauman's afterword encompasses the significance of this novel for the modern reader: "Rebecca is a deeply subversive work, one that undermines the very genre to which critics consigned it. Far from being an 'exquisite' love story, Rebecca raises questions about women's acquiescence to male values that are as pertinent today as they were sixty-four years ago".
I would definitely recommend! :)
