A Tale of Two Churches
Our town has two parish churches; St Swithun's which sits just behind the High Street on one of the highest points in the area, meaning its bell tower can be seen for many miles around.
The second (pictured) is St Mary's and was established in 1910. It is oft suggested that it was created as the town was expanding. The reality is very different it was established in support of the Oxford Movement thus making this church very much 'High Church' Anglican.
Undoubtedly it was influenced by the establishment of an Anglican Convent of Saint Margaret by John Mason Neal in the town some 50 years earlier.
