Hanging loos

Georgian houses were built without bathrooms or toilets and people relied on chamber pots for their ablutions. A subsequent development was the 'hanging loo', a rather precarous structure tacked on to the back of a building. Bath has several examples of 'hanging loos'. These would have holes through which waste would fall into pits ready for collection by the 'Night Soil ' men who had the unenviable job of clearing the human waste from the wealthy households.
They were often rather shoddily constructed and several of these loos came crashing down, occasionally with their surprised occupants in situ.
You can see a couple of examples here.
