Manorhead, Manor Valley

In 1396 King Robert III gave the barony of Manorhead to Sir William Inglis as reward for killing an English knight. The knight, Sir Thomas de Struthers, an English champion, had bid definance to any Scotsman 'who dae encounter him'. The Inglis family went on to own Manorhead for the next 300 years.

Manorhead is located at the south end of the Manor Valley and looked very bleak today as the rain moved in over the hills and the snow melt continued. The hills in the valley are amongst the highest in the Borders. The largest being Dollar Law at 817 metres. The valley is today used mainly for sheep farming. A large pipeline carries water from the Megget Resovoir high in the hills above through the valley and onward to Edinburgh.
