Smokey 1928 hr (Thursday 9th April 2020)

Smokey spent most of the day sunbathing on the car port roof. He's been on antibiotics since last Friday and has just started on a different diet to the one prescribed last week. He certainly has not lost his appetite. This evening he was on the roof again and miaowed and stood up when he saw me pass by underneath.

Medicine Head - This Love Of Old (recorded 1970, CBS Studios, London)
Medicine Head were a Birmingham-based duo who blagged their way to a gig that John Peel was MC-ing at Mother's Club in Erdington and gave him an open-reel tape that included His Guiding Hand,. They were swiftly signed to his Dandelion label, but on the advice of John Lennon it was the original demo that was released as their debut single in 1969, rightly as it turned out as it became a major success for the tiny label. They never re-recorded the single, but it's B-side, This Love Of Old, was re-recorded for their album New Bottles Old Medicine in 1970. It is the album version that is to be found on the new compilation Crawling Up A Hill - A Journey Through The British Blues Boom 1966-71, which I was exploring on this day, specifically CD2 on which this track appears. I was a frequent attender at Mother's but never saw Medicine Head live, although I liked them. I did hear their session for Top Gear in January 1970, which did include a new version of His Guiding Hand.
