Upper Silurian
Today's the day ……………………… to look at the rocks
When it's low tide in the Dee Estuary and the River Dee is at a low ebb, the underlying geology of the Kirkcudbright area is beautifully exposed for all to see.
This is the view from the bridge at Tongland at such a time and you are looking down at the rocks of the Carghidown Formation (Hawick Group) - thin-bedded, calcareous greywackes and interbedded silty mudstones. They were deposited during the Silurian period about 430 million years ago.
Back in the mists of time, I was a student of geology at Hull University and although by now I've probably forgotten most of what I ever learned, it still gives me a thrill to look down on such a magnificent sight …………………….!.
