It's A Shame

My Dear Princess and Dear Fellows,

For a while there, in the early 90's, I didn't keep up with music. I became disenchanted with it. I retreated to just a few bands that I really liked a lot.

And I've always had a thing for women's voices in particular. So for a while there it was all about 10,000 Maniacs and Indigo Girls and Eddi Reader. I definitely leaned toward folky and even dipped my toe into country a bit. There was a bit of Nanci Griffith going on.

I think it was most probably you lot - most notably Fat Pete - who dragged me kicking and screaming from my musical asceticism. I remember you loaned me Nirvana and Violent Femmes and made me a mix tape which you labelled, "Better Light A Candle Than Curse The Darkness"*, which included Radiohead and Terrorvision.

Nevertheless, I have always retained a fondness for folky, country women's bands. And in recent years, I have again become lax in listening to modern music. It's not like before. Back in the early 90's I deliberately turned my back. Now it's just lack of arsedness. And anyway, there seems to be something a little off about liking bands that 20 year olds are into. Like I am trying too hard, or something.

However, I am about to ruin the careers of two young musicians when I tell you that I have discovered First Aid Kit in a big way. They just sound so familiar to me. The two women singers voices curl around each other in a most delightful way, and it sounds just like something I would have loved back in my 20's. Like Belle and Sebastian meet Julee Cruise and sing Natalie Merchant songs.

Which is the long way around of me saying that I have been HAMMERING this song on my phone today. I like the rest of the album too, but that one is my favourite. And in my head, it is 1993 again.

Today's other main news headline is that Jasper got pooped on by a bird today. Poor little guy. That's just HARSH. He's stayed close ever since.

I have attached an extra to today's blip which made me laugh.

* And I did become pretty fond of The Darkness, many years later.
