Hooray

This seems a suitable entry for Tiny Tuesday, the first two lettuce seedlings breaking through. I sowed them on the 2nd and it's the 7th today, so that's impressive I think. Hopefully one or two more will start bursting through soon or it's going to be a pretty meagre salad. They are definitely smaller than an egg!
It was a lovely day today, and I did a couple of non-gardening jobs.
I made a coffee table back in nineteen oatcake, when teachers got to access night classes which were hobby rather than teaching skills based. It's taken a bit of a beating over the last 40 plus years, so today I decided to sand it down and see if a fresh coat of varnish would improve its appearance. It has, but as I did the varnishing in the sun in the garage doorway, the varnish has dried rather patchily, so I'm going to sand it down a bit and give it another coat. It looks good though.
I did well out of those classes, I did a few years of pottery at Moray House and two or three years of woodwork. As well as the table, I made hand rails for our steps down to the back garden, and fitted them myself to the stair including making concrete bases. I made a matching pair of bookcases, a pair of child stair gates, a car for my nursery class - not one that moved, but a piece of furniture which could hold four children, two in the front and two in the back, a dolls cot which I made big enough to hold a child. I've still got one of the bookcases, the table and the cot and various bits of pottery as evidence! The woodwork class was in the basement of Dean College, or the Dean Centre as it was then, nowadays known as Gallery Two of the modern art gallery.
I also sanded down the window ledge by our back door, the varnish had got very chipped over the years, so I've restained it and tomorrow I'll varnish it. The final job was touching up some of the knot holes in the bathroom. They used some new wood when they fitted it and didn't seal the knots, so the marks come through periodically, a bit of oil based primer then a coat of paint and they will be good as new.
Ali popped round today and picked up some plants, it was nice to see her from the statutory distance of two metres apart.
Boris spent last night in ICU, but its OK because Donald has spoken to the major US pharmaceutical companies and they've gone to London and they're doing really good work and he's instructed them to help Boris's medical team so that's OK! Honestly, that man is unbelievable.
In the meantime Nicola has issued a video session of her talking reassuringly with young children about the virus and answering some of their questions. I know who I'd rather have on my side!
