Protection?

In Scottish folklore white heather symbolises good luck and protection. Before there were road bridges across lochs and sounds vehicles lined up waiting for small slow turntable ferries. I remember local women at Ballachulish ferry offering to sell weary motorists sprigs of "lucky white heather".
