Manna from Heaven: the McDonald's Filet-o-Fish

It was grocery day, which is to say that it was a day to be feared: in which one of us has to go into town and brave the crowds at the store, and try not to either give or receive germs. I felt like I was sending my husband off to a war zone as we readied his sword, his armor, and his shield. OK, so maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but I did give him a mask and gloves, and a container of hand sanitizer.

We have decided to send out only one of us at a time, to mitigate our risk. And as my husband is much taller, darker, and fiercer than me, we send HIM for groceries. (He was also already our primary grocery shopper before all of this.) When he walks through an aisle, people tend to move out of the way! Not so for me, as I am about 5 feet 2 inches tall and totally nonthreatening.

I fret while he is gone. Will someone try to get too close to him? Will someone try to touch him? Cough on him? Breathe his air? Will he bring home awful germs, such that we all will die? But a reasonable amount of time later, I heard his car in the driveway, and I ran to the front porch to help wipe down all of the groceries with disinfectant wipes before bringing them into our house.

And when we had finished, I realized my husband was hiding something under his arm. And then what did he pull out but a McDonald's bag! It was a sight for sore eyes! And what did he remove from it but a McDonald's filet-o-fish sandwich, just for me!??? My eyes grew wide with anticipation. What a good provider!

First, I took the sandwich out of its wrapper and threw the wrapper away, and put the sandwich on a plate. Then, I photographed that fish sandwich with my little friends, who thought it looked pretty amazing. And then I microwaved the sandwich just a little to warm it up and kill any germs. And then I snarfed it down in record time.

I have to say that it was one of the BEST fish sandwiches of my entire life! I sat and moaned happily as I ate it. Oh boy, was it good. In a time where we are limiting our travels and our exposure to people, any little piece of normalcy is such a treat. It tasted like manna from heaven. What a delicious fish sandwich!

And here's a song to go with this little slice of heaven: Mike Reno and Ann Wilson, with Almost Paradise, from the film Footloose.
