Hearts for Heroes
I think we are all heroes in one way or another. Those of us who stay home when we would much rather go out. Those who hustle to prepare take-out food and bring it to the car, the delivery man who brings our Blue Apron box to the porch, the teachers who strive to create a whole new way of teaching with little notice and those from the Pilates studio who have managed to teach at least one Pilates mat class a day via Zoom, not to mention the refuse collectors who take away all the used antibacterial wipes, tissues and germ laden garbage.
The news here is that California should prepare for a spike in Covid19 cases in the next two weeks. The state is recruiting retired doctors, nursing students and anyone with health care expertise to join the army of medical workers who are already working tirelessly to contain this epidemic. They are all heroes. I hope one positive thing to come from this is that we all realize how broken our health care system is and how essential it is that there should be universal health care which provides care to everyone and pays those who provide it a decent wage for their service. Hearts are one thing and all these people deserve our respect and appreciation but what they really deserve is proper protection in the form of appropriate clothing, masks and gloves, proper equipmen,t such as respirators and test kits to treat the stricken, and a decent living wage.
The heroes are turning out to be some of the most under appreciated, taken for granted people among us, yet where would we be without them?
