Another roadside Blip

White Comfrey. ( Symphytum orientale) wsa introduced from west Russia and Turkey. It is now naturalised in hedgerows, churchyards and waste places mainly in eastern and southern England but here growing in Arnside.
There are several different Comfreys but this is the earliest one to flower.

An old name for Comfreys is Knitbone and indeed for hundreds of years it has been used to make healing poultices for sprains and bruises.
The leaves are also soaked in water to make a green manure. Mrs. K’s father did this every year on his excellent vegetable garden on the Isle of Wight and indeed we did it ourselves in our younger days.
