Tom and I like to stretch our birthdays out, so she gave this book to me last night. It is really, really, amazingly good. Brian Doyle was a Portland writer who died of brain cancer at 60 in 2017. This is a book of his essays published posthumously last year. Each one is a great story: Playing catch with his dad; his reaction to the shooting at UCC; an aunt trying to “exorcise” the devils out of him; sleeping in a cabin by the ocean as a kid. I find myself with much more reading time now. Highly recommended. Great quote from him in the foreword: “We’re only here for a minute. We’re here for a little window. And to use that time to catch and share shards of light and grace seems to me the great story.”
